TYLER HANES HOMETOWN: Marietta, GA FIRST BROADWAY SHOW I SAW: “Jekyll and Hyde” BROADWAY DEBUT: “Oklahoma!” WHEN DID YOUR BROADWAY DREAM COME TRUE: The summer after I graduated high school, I attended a summer musical theatre intensive run by Ann Reinking where I was able to study with the likes of Gwen Verdon, Gregory Hines and Patti LuPone. I had the time of my life! Ann asked me about my plans for the following year. I told her I was attending Carnegie Mellon for musical theatre on a full ride. Ann then asked me to come and sing for her the following day but wouldn’t tell me why. I got so worked up and nervous, I literally made myself sick. The following day, I went into a room to sing for her, Gwen and my mentor, Dave Clemmons. After I sang, she literally held out her hand and offered me a spot in the First National Tour of the Tony Award-winning musical, “Fosse” - just like that. At first I thought it was some sick joke but she proceeded to tell me all the amazing things I would get to do in the show and how she would take care of CMU and set me up with the right agent and I lost it! The fact that a dream of mine was becoming a reality and granted by one of my idols is still something I will NEVER forget and it changed my life forever! PRE-PERFORMANCE ROUTINE: Vocalize at home. Get an iced green tea from Starbucks. Arrive at the theatre usually an hour before show (I like to take my time getting ready for the show and don’t like feeling rushed). Do a physical warm up. FUNNIEST ON-STAGE MISHAP: While playing Ren McCormick in “Footloose” opposite Sarah Pfeifer, I was singing the Act 1 finale “I’m Free”. As the second verse approached, I completely blanked and lost all of the lyrics and proceeded to sing in gibberish - for the rest of the song. I was singing to the cast and they all were stupefied. I was humiliated! BEST ADVICE TO STUDENTS PURSUING A CAREER IN THEATRE: Always stay true to who you are and never stop training. Practice makes perfect! Live your Broadway Dreams this Saturday, July 14 at 7:30 pm when Tyler joins a cast of Broadway’s brightest stars and Omaha area performers in BDF’s EXPRESS YOURSELF at Omaha Performing Arts’ Holland Performing Arts Center!
